# LTER media messaging activity - June 3, 2013

2022 Note: I hope to update this section soon!

Please use these materials freely in your own student/scientist trainings, and [let me know](mailto:///hart3@fas.harvard.edu) if you have any suggestions!

- [Slides](/file_url/97) (skip to slide 24 -- although you're welcome to borrow any others that you like!)
- [Research papers](/file_url/98) (11 of them)
- [Media packets](/file_url/99) corresponding to papers

Note: To build your own additional packets, I recommend the following steps:

1. Go to [AAAS Science Shots](http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/scienceshots/) to find great blurbs with links to the original scientific papers.
2. Use [Google News](http://news.google.com/) (or just plain Google) to search for media hits on the paper (try keyword combinations that include subject matter, author name, author institution)
3. Encourage participants who complete this activity to report back to the group on their process - how did their ideas compare to what was published? Any surprises?
4. To build on what I've done:
    1. 1. Include in the media packets any popular Tweets or other social media associated with these news articles
        2. Include in the media packets whatever metrics of success you can discern from the web articles (number of user shares, number of user comments)
